How to choose a UPS

• Watts, not VA: add up the real consumption of what you'll connect and choose a UPS with 30% headroom over that figure in watts. A desktop computer with monitor draws around 200-300 W, so a 700 VA / 360 W UPS gives you a few minutes to save and shut down calmly.
• Line-interactive or online: line-interactive covers computers, routers and recorders. Online double conversion always delivers regenerated power and is the right choice for servers, NAS and critical equipment.
• Runtime: if you want to keep a router and a CCTV recorder running through the cut, calculate their real consumption and move up a range; runtime drops quickly the more loaded the UPS is.
• Format and outlets: tower for the workstation, rack/tower to mount it in the cabinet; check whether you need Schuko or IEC sockets.
