How to size it: look at the watts, not the VA. A desktop PC with a monitor draws around 200-300 W, so a 700 VA / 360 W UPS buys you a few minutes to save your work and shut down calmly. If you want to keep a router and a CCTV recorder running through the outage, work out the real load and move up a size.

Especially worth it for video surveillance installations: a recorder that loses power suddenly can lose the footage.
