VESA screws for TVs: size, length and safe mounting
Hanging a television is not just about lining up four holes. The bracket can have the right VESA pattern and the installation can still fail because the thread does not match, the screw goes in too little, or it bottoms out before it clamps the plate. The shape of the back panel, the spacers and the thickness of the washers matter too.
This guide focuses on those measurements. Before buying or tightening anything, check the TV manual: the manufacturer should state the thread diameter, the acceptable length and, sometimes, the tightening torque. If that information is missing, it is better to measure carefully than to try screws at random.
What VESA means and what it does not tell you about screws
The VESA pattern expresses the horizontal and vertical distance between the centres of the holes, in millimetres. For example, VESA 200 × 200 identifies a 200 mm square. This figure lets you choose a plate that reaches all four points, but on its own it does not define the thread or the depth available.
Two televisions with VESA 200 × 200 can use different screws. Screen size is not a reliable way to work them out either. The usual metric threads are named M4, M6 or M8: the letter indicates a metric thread and the number its nominal diameter in millimetres. The fact that M8 is wider than M6 does not make it better; it has to match the threaded insert in the set.
How to identify the correct thread
The first source is the manual or the technical sheet for the exact model. Look for sections such as “wall mounting”, “wall mount” or “VESA”. Do not settle for a table meant for a whole series if your screen size or model suffix is different.
If you cannot find the specification, compare the original screw from the tabletop stand only when the manufacturer confirms that it uses the same thread. That is not always the case. A caliper lets you measure the outside diameter of the screw, but on its own it does not confirm the thread pitch. A thread gauge does help to tell them apart.
Never use force as an identification method. The right screw goes in straight for several turns with your fingers. If it tilts, jams straight away or needs a tool from the start, take it out. Forcing it can cross-thread the insert or damage it inside the television.
Useful length: the measurement that avoids two opposite failures
The commercial length of a screw is usually measured from under the head to the tip. On a countersunk head, the reference may include the whole head, although this type should not replace the specified one without checking how the plate seats.
What matters for the installation is how much of the screw ends up inside the television. It can be estimated like this:
penetration = screw length − plate thickness − washers − spacers
Example: a 25 mm screw that goes through a 3 mm plate, a 1 mm washer and an 8 mm spacer gives around 13 mm of penetration. That figure is only valid if the manufacturer allows 13 mm. There is no universal safe depth.
A screw that is too short may grip only a few turns and strip the thread under load. One that is too long may bottom out before it clamps the plate. Carrying on turning it will not bring the bracket closer: it will transfer the force to the bottom of the housing and could affect internal parts.
When spacers are needed
Spacers create distance between the plate and the housing. They are used when the back is curved, the holes are recessed, a protrusion stops the plate from sitting flat, or the connectors need room. They must have a stable base and line up with each fixing point.
Do not stack loose nuts or washers into a tower. That solution has very little bearing surface and makes it easy for the plate to end up tilted. - Measure the total thickness that will sit outside the housing: plate, washer and spacer.
- Select the confirmed diameter and calculate the penetration. Compare it with the manufacturer's range.
- Thread the four screws in a few turns by hand. Do not tighten one fully while the others are loose.
- Tighten in a cross pattern and gradually. Use a torque wrench if a torque is specified. “Firm” does not mean applying all the force you have.
- Check that there is no play, that the plate is not bowed and that no spacer moves.
- Carry on with the wall fixing following the bracket manual. The TV's VESA hardware is no substitute for anchors suited to the wall material.
On large televisions, work with another person. One should hold and guide while the other checks the hook-up. Lifting the set by a corner, or by a half-fixed plate, loads the panel and the inserts unevenly.
Common mistakes with VESA screws
- Choosing the screw by screen inches. The same commercial size can hide different backs and threads.
- Confusing the VESA pattern with the thread diameter. VESA 400 × 400 does not mean M4 or a length of 40 mm.
- Compensating for a long screw with improvised washers. It is only valid if the assembly is stable and the final penetration is the stated one.
- Leaving out spacers on a curved back. As you tighten, the plate can flex or mark the housing.
- Using an electric screwdriver at full power. It is easy to strip the thread or exceed the torque before you notice.
- Tightening even though the plate is still loose. The screw may have bottomed out; insisting increases the risk of internal damage.
- Mixing similar screws. An incorrect diameter or pitch can start the thread and then seize.
