This RJ45 Cat 6 connector goes on without a crimping tool: lay the wires in the guide, press the housing shut and the IDC blades make the contact for you. If you have never crimped a network cable, this is how you terminate a wall socket or a patch lead without buying a tool.
It takes both solid and stranded conductors from AWG 22 to 26, which covers virtually every installation and patch cable on the market. The supplied reducer adjusts to three different jacket diameters between 5 and 8.5 mm, so the same connector works on a thin Cat 5e and on a stiff Cat 6 installation cable.
The threaded cap clamps down on the jacket and acts as strain relief. That is exactly where home-made patch leads fail: the tug that pulls the wires out of contact. With the cap tightened, the jacket takes the load rather than the guides.
This is unshielded UTP. For shielded installations you need the STP version, which carries the ground continuity through to the rack.
