A USB hub solves a simple problem: not enough ports. The doubt comes when choosing between a model with an external supply and one that draws power from the computer itself. Both can be used to connect a keyboard, mouse, USB stick or printer, but they do not behave the same way when several devices ask for power at once.

“Unpowered” does not mean the hub works without electricity. It means it receives power through the USB cable connected to the computer. A powered hub, on the other hand, adds an external mains adapter. That difference affects stability and the kind of peripherals you should connect, but on its own it does not increase USB speed.

Difference between a powered hub and one without an external supply

Speed: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 are not the same

Power does not determine speed. A hub with a supply can still be USB 2.0, and a hub without one can be USB 3.0. Check the version of the hub, of the computer port and of the devices. The complete connection will run at the speed of the slowest element in the chain.

For a mouse, keyboard or printer, USB 2.0 usually covers the need. For fast memory sticks, external drives, network adapters or capture cards, look for USB 3.0 when the peripheral can make use of it. If the light devices work but a drive disconnects when a copy starts, insufficient power is a reasonable suspicion.
